Author - A subset of the daily journals that Cook made on his his three expeditions to the Pacific. The map of New Zealand is a major accomplishment and the drawings preserve culture and society that is absent in most places of the world. Cook comes across foremost as a navigator and scientist who is politically astute Occasionally unhappy with the poor behaviour of some members of his crew while often sympathetic with the natives he encounters - he reflects that the [wretched] Aboriginals in Australia are actually probably happier than most Europeans.
